The Sentier des Carrières

A walk around the Rocher de Cheffois, with its former talc quarries flooded by springs.

Easy, shady walk in the forest. Swimming is prohibited as the water is very cold and deep.

1.5km loop from the Chapelle car park (point 8)

8.5km round trip from Moulin des Etrebières

1- Leave the Moulin des Etrebières on the white track and turn left at the crossroads.

2- When you reach the road, turn left and then straight on at the next crossroads.

3- At the end of the road, turn left and continue to the roundabout. You will pass the reproduction of the Lourdes grotto.

4- At the roundabout, turn opposite to enter the village of Cheffois.

5- Take the first road on the right down a triangular garden. This is the historic garden where Joseph Ripaud started his business in 1955, which has now become a renowned nursery (Ripaud Nurseries).

6- At the bottom, turn right and cross the bridge. There used to be a water mill here. Continue along this road past the church.

7- Pass the town hall and the village shops and continue as far as Rue de la Chapelle, which you turn left into to climb the rock.

8- At the top, you'll come to the Notre-Dame-des-Mineurs chapel.

9- Take the signposted path up into the undergrowth.

10- Continue straight ahead along the path, following the blue markings. Ignore the yellow and red markings to the left. Enjoy the beautiful views over the Etang des Carrières.

11- Keep following the path through the forest, following the blue markings.

12- At the crossroads, turn right (blue markings).

13- At the next crossroads, turn right (against the signs!).

14- On the road, take a short diversions to the right to admire the view of the Etang des Carrières.

15- Return to the road or the grassed area parallel to the road.

16- At the crossroads, turn left down the rock towards the roundabout. Take the small road opposite, which has no signposts. This part of the walk is not ideal, but you'll soon be back on quiet roads.

17- Take the first turning on the left and at the bottom of the Moulin Brunet hamlet, you'll find the bridge on the left, which takes you back to the cave road.

18- Turn left to return to the gîte, then take the first turning on the right.

19- At the crossroads, you can either go straight ahead and then take the white path on the right that you came from, or turn right and then take the first turning on the left to reach the mill.
