Discovering Luçon
Luçon, the spiritual capital of Lower Poitou, was the seat of Cardinal Richelieu’s bishopric. The beautiful cathedral and its cloister are well worth a visit.
Luçon is also known as the town of romantic gardens, notably featuring the Dumaine Garden, which covers 4 hectares. It was bequeathed to the town in 1872 by Pierre Hyacinthe Dumaine, along with the buildings that now house the town hall.
To explore the old town, follow the studs on the ground bearing the town’s symbol: a pike (lucius in Latin, from which the name Luçon is said to derive)
Take a stroll through the streets of Luçon to explore its architecture, both inside and out. If you ask at the tourist office, you’ll be able to admire the monumental painted ceiling in the Ursuline Chapel at Sainte Ursule College
Round off your visit with a liqueur tasting at the Vrignaud distillery in Corpe.
